A Credit Crisis: a moment of the truth for the creative industry


In response to the turmoil in worldwide financial markets and repetitive negative reporting in the media, Lava graphic designers offers a fresh and positive view. Lava's creative director, Hans Wolbers, believes that the current credit crisis is a real possibility for the creative industry to show the world just what it can achieve. Lava adds immediately action to its words by launching crisisdesign.nl.

Crisisdesign.nl is Lava's answer to an uncertain year. On the site the company offers a number of 'crisis packages' for several design activities. "it is not about cutting prices, we are not 'budget' company", says Wolbers, "instead we see that we need to be proactive in the value clients get with their budget. With crisisdesign.nl we offer clients to buy package deals for identity design or magazine design." It is important that the profit for the client is not in cost cutting, but is in raising efficiency, which includes the efficiency of the client. Wolbers: "Brainstorming has been restricted to 1 hour, with a maximum of 2 presentations of an hour, and we only present to the direct decision makers."

Besides the serious offer of packages also stands a more playful action on the site. A client has the option of linking to their assignment the index of the Dutch Stock Exchange, the AEX. If the AEX index decreases on a day by 1.5% it is a sign for the state of the economy and this percentage then becomes a discount for the client. If the AEX index however increases by 1.5% it then is an indication of the improvement of the economy and this percentage is then added to the clients bill,' says Wolbers.

Additionally there is an offer to buy 'summer-hours' in advance as there is a period of time over the summer months where many people in Holland go on holidays and business slows down. Clients have the possibility of buying these hours in advance at an advantageous price.

Crisisdesign.nl runs for the first quarter of 2009, after which Lava will revisit the offers. Wolbers: "Of course we wish to stimulate people and primarily our intent is a serious one to take a proactive step in offering more possibilities to our clients. Often in the world of design designers apply their creativity purely to the form of things. We believe however that designers should use their creativity as much in innovating the area of business as to the forms of their solutions. The current credit crisis is a real possibility for the creative industry to show the world just what it can achieve."  

Due to the nature of this initiative, for example all meetings taking place at Lava etc, it is primarily offered to Dutch clients. Clients situated outside the Netherlands can contact Lava directly to discuss how best we can make the most out of your budget.
